Freeport High School’s Scholastic Bowl team is excited about their new season.
“I am looking forward to a new season and hopefully growing a little bit more and having some new people on the team,” Coach Rachel Petty said. “It’s just a different group of students that can get involved with something that’s not sports so even if you’re not like an athletic person than you can get a little bit more involved in just something else that’s cool.”
“I’m looking forward to going to the tournaments and just the overall experience of Scholastic Bowl,” Junior Zora Cunningham said. “It’s a lot of fun to just have a chance to show off your knowledge in front of different schools.”
Students like going to tournaments, but there’s some things they would change.
“If I could change something, it would probably be a little bit more of scheduling or just a way to advertise and get more kids involved and just have more consistent involvement because it is a really small team and sometimes it’s difficult to have people come and just stay,” Petty said.
“I would change being more fluent in the questions like answering them quickly and having better responses,” Junior Macie Lawson said.
“I would study more before the tournaments,” Cunningham said. “Some of the questions definitely come out of left field at times so it’s nice to have a bigger knowledge basis.”
Freeport High School’s Scholastic Bowl team won 2-1 last Tuesday. They beat Belvidere North and Rockford East, but lost to Rockford Auburn.
“One of my favorite things about Scholastic Bowl is the chance to learn new things and hang out with people that you normally wouldn’t hang out with,” Cunningham said.
“I’m really excited, I like the matches,” Sophomore Emily Elmore said. “I like hanging out with my friends and traveling to different schools.”
“I’m excited for our meets and compete against different teams and learn more about different career questions,” Lawson said.
Their next match is on Tuesday Nov. 19 @ Belvidere North.
