On Tuesday, January 7th 2024, the Pretzels Varsity Girls Basketball team took an outstanding victory against the Lady Titans on their own court, with a score of 56-49.
The Lady Pretzels have come this season ready to prove themselves, and they did just that by beating the 2nd Place, NIC-10 team. During the game, the Lady Pretzels had to all step up and show that they are all a team, which ended up with a win in their books. The game was neck-and-neck for a big part until the Pretzels got a lead that they were not willing to give up in the third quarter!
The team has progressed very much this year! Keagan Huggins, a sophomore, led Freeport to a win against the Lady Titans with 18 points. Huggins is a captain of the Pretzel’s Varsity Team and has made it clear that she is here to lead by example.
After asking Huggins how she felt about their win, she said “I’m really excited that we won because we work hard and together in the gym everyday. We have some bad games, but I can tell we are getting better day by day and finding each other’s greatnesses to help benefit us. I like to show my teammates we all make mistakes, but the next play is always coming. I hope this really sets the rest of the tone for this year and strives us to push for Hono.”
Along with Huggins, Aaliyah Martin, a Junior is a very great asset on the floor. Martin has been on the Varsity team for 3 years and has started every game since, but 2.
We asked Martin how she felt about this win and she said, “I’m glad I got to be a part of it. We really worked for it, especially in the third quarter with such a big lead. I think that it showed us that we are so much more than what people have played us to be.”
In past years, the Lady Pretzels have always found themselves behind teams such as Boylan. People from outside can tell the work ethic has changed for the Pretzels as they climb to the top. We asked another athlete in the program, Anna Shaw, how it felt to watch this compared to last year.
Shaw said, “Last year, I remember sitting there devastated for the team and ready to leave because you could see the team chemistry was not good. This year I was ecstatic to see that the girls on Varsity have all been getting what they deserve. It was a great game to watch.”
The team this year has stepped onto a new platform and is ready to keep climbing to the top game by game!
