Corey Scoma is the new assistant coach for Girls Flag Football at Freeport High School this year who hopes to bring his experience with football to the girls.
His first impression of Flag Football was that there was pride and passion already here from the coaches, players and athletic directors, even mentioning the parents.
“If I didn’t know any better, especially coming from out of state and coming here, I would have thought that this football program had been here for years and years,” Scoma said.
He wants to bring his perspective of football and his experience to football, because he’s been around football so much he had forgotten a lot about the game.
“This game is constantly evolving,” Scoma said, but he hopes he can use his experiences and his lens from traditional football and combine that with the aspects of flag football. He hopes that it can be a winning team going forward
Scoma said he coaches flag football because he loves it and wanted a new challenge, but flag football is different from the traditional football he knows.
“It’s the fastest growing sport in America, and I thought It’d be awesome to be one of the pioneers in this game that’s going to stick around for a long time,” he said.
There are three goals Scoma is looking forward to: winning the NIC-10 championship, developing players and continuing to grow the program by spreading the word about it and sport to girls that are interested in flag football.
