Brendon Green shows off his hat during Mrs. Kurtz's 3rd hour class
Students at FHS have a new dress code. The new dress code allows FHS students to wear headgear like ski masks, bonnets, and hats starting this school year which promotes better relationships between students and staff.
“As part of the School Code of Conduct committee, I pushed for hats to be allowed,” Create Academy Dean Nick Namio said. “It’s a part of the Create Academy and what people in our careers wear and when it’s cold outside people could use a beanie.”
Students were being incorrectly identified as gang members or as unprofessional for wearing a hat, according to Namio.
Hats are a gang identifier anymore like it was in the past.
Students want to wear hats for many reasons like their hair isn’t done and they want it covered or it’s cold outside and they want to wear a beanie.
Students still can’t show a certain amount of skin by wearing tank tops or short shorts. Students who break dress code will get an in-school or out-of-school suspension.
“I like the dress code much better now,” Namio said. “I now don’t have interactions with students over their dress.”
