To go to athletic events, Freeport High School students need to be eligible; this means passing all of your classes and having no referrals. Here are tips and tricks for students to stay eligible:
First tip, do your work.
“Just stay engaged and just do your work,” Law Enforcement teacher Anthony Dedmond said.
Doing your work is important, considering that’s the only way for you to get a grade.
The second tip, stay engaged during class.
In order to be engaged in class, put your phone down and actually pay attention, Dedmond said.
“I’m so sick of these kids not doing their work,” he said.
Third tip, don’t get referrals.
“Well there’s a code of conduct that the school board puts together along with the higher up administration,” Nick Namio, Create Academy Dean, said “Typically, students that have zero referrals tend to have higher grades than students that have multiple referrals.”
Fourth tip, is to catch up on missing work.
“I would say that there is no easy way to catch up on missing work its just one of those things you have to sit down and do no matter how hard it seems,” English and Video Production teacher Jena Kleindl said. “So it’s better to do it now before you dig too deep of a hole that you can’t get out of.”
She also adds that the key to success is sticking to your current assignments first, then getting help for missing assignments later. Teachers don’t want you to fail, so don’t feel like you can’t ask for help!
And for the final tip, come to school.
The more missing days a student has, the worse their grades are. Students who miss more than two days of school per month are considered chronically absent.
