“Dang, you guys should start a band,” Mrs. Lobdell, the 8th grade math teacher of Hudson Bauscher and Wesley Loring, said during class in May 2023. Little did she know that comment started The Lobbin Robbins, an up-and-coming band at Freeport High School.
Wesley, singer, and Hudson, drummer, needed to find some other musicians to round out their band and approached Cainan Becker, guitar player, and Myles Moore, bassist. They’d been friends since 5th grade. With the addition of the new two musicians, the Lobbin Robbins was complete.
Although the band only started so recently, they have already had a handful of local shows around and beyond Freeport.
“It is basically just combining everything we’ve practiced and just putting it into one,” Cainan said. “It’s basically the same thing as a basketball game: it’s more of the energy coming from the crowd that makes it a good show, or a good game.”
Despite having success in their shows, Hudson says the band is not satisfied.
“We have to set ourselves to a higher standard,” Hudson said. “We can always be better.”
Cainan feels that by starting young, they can get far in the future.
“We have an advantage because we’re young and I can see us going far because of that,” Cainan said.
Though it is a fun time, it takes a lot of hard work.
“Starting something like this definitely takes a lot of dedication and sacrifice,” Wesley said. “We used to have a lot of free time but now we have 2 hours max a day. It’s worth it, and we still do it for the satisfaction of putting a show on. The feeling you get in your chest when going on stage is unexplainable. It’s really fun.”
“We just started out messing around, but then we get these people who we haven’t seen before coming to support a culture that’s been hidden away,” Myles said.
High school bands in the past were not as scarce as they seem to be today, according to Myles. Myles feels The Lobbin Robbins could revive a culture that has been lost in part due to the disappearance of live music, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In the past, live music and bands were very common,” Myles said. “Nowadays it is almost all digital, and the art of performing music has been lost.”
Aside from the band, the musicians are all involved in other activities. Hudson does band and is currently in the Showtime band. Cainan, Myles, and Wesley all swim for Freeport High School. Cainan enjoys Subway and his red guitar. Wesley also likes making YouTube videos in his free time. Myles is a three-sport athlete who does soccer, swimming, and tennis.
The four high school students all have one common goal: to have fun. They reflect the same values as many of our athletes who put in hard work to perform their best at a game, except instead of a game, it’s a show. Aside from having fun however, they have a harder, more ambitious goal: reviving a culture.
The next show of the Lobbin Robbins is on January 3rd at Eagle’s Club, and more details can be found on their Facebook.
