From November 21 to January 1st, Freeport High School Student Council is helping raise money for The Salvation Army. Students are volunteering to go bell ringing, which encourages people to donate.

Members of the Student Council could choose from 4 different sites: Farm and Fleet, Cubs, Sullivans, and Walmart. They spend two hours of their day talking with citizens and ringing bells.
Junior Zaida Dose says, “I enjoyed talking with people in the community about their holiday plans.”
Bell ringing is super important for the community because the proceeds go directly to The Salvation Army. It brings in thousands of dollars every year.
Student Council advisor Mrs. Kurtz says, “Student council members are busy and involved, so bell ringing is an easy way for them to get service hours on their own time. It’s an easier way to give back to the community without stressing about planning a service project.”
Most students said they enjoyed helping their community. They liked spending time volunteering and talking with the people in their community.
This year, FHS Student Council has already raised over 700 dollars for Salvation Army, and in previous years they have raised more than 1500 dollars.
The only time The Salvation Army only bell rings is in the holiday season, so it’s super important. During the holiday season, the Salvation Army provided assistance to 2,479,842 people. They provide food, gifts, and other essential items through toy drives, meal distribution, and the Angel Tree program.
