During the week of January 12th, Freeport High School installed vending machines for students. They spent about a week empty, but were then filled the week of the 19th.
Principal Sarah Hasken said “The vending machines were brought back as a way to increase revenue for nutrition and dining services. They are going to help bring back money that was lost due to budget cuts.”
The vending machines are filled with various drinks like Gatorade, Water, Bubbl’r, Apple Juice, Vita Ice and more. Although many students said apple juice for three dollars was overpriced.
Most students like the choices in the machines, but Sophomore Evan DeJong said, “I would love to see Alanis replace the Propel, not many people buy that.”
Although students were excited, some teachers have mixed feelings about distractions that they might cause.
Josh Bost, a history teacher at the high school, said “They were here when I first started teaching, and I don’t love seeing them back because students always disappear from class and come back with a drink.”
Anthony Dedmond, another teacher at the high school states, “I’m glad to see them back and see students enjoying them.”
The vending machines are super beneficial to students, and they are really enjoying them.
Sophomore Ashton Roelfs said, “I get something from the vending machines almost every day. It makes my day more enjoyable because I get something else to drink besides water.”
80% of students said that they were excited to see vending machines in the school. Some wonder, will we get vending machines with snacks next?
