Over the past few years, the use of artificial intelligence has grown rapidly. This is leaving a bad taste in many teachers’ mouths, who fear that the use of AI is damaging to students’ brains.
Mr. Giuffre, science teacher at Freeport High School, says, “I’ve seen kids have AI do their homework, and I just haven’t seen the other side where kids use AI to make their homework better.”
Ms. Honary, an english teacher at FHS, says, “it’s really dangerous to encourage AI usage, and I think it’s very detrimental, especially to younger minds. School is about practicing how to think and AI takes away the action of thinking. I think it’s gonna have very detrimental consequences for students.”
While AI is very easily taken advantage of, some students really do use AI to help them without relying on it.
Madelyn Barr, FHS student, said this about AI, “If I don’t understand a topic it helps break it down for me.”
According to “Schools’ Embrace of AI Connected to Increased Risks,” a report from nonprofit Center for Democracy and Technology, 86% of students used AI in the 2024-2025 school year.
AI will be prominent in education for the years to come, but will this help students process their thoughts, or will it take their thoughts away from them entirely?
