Have you ever considered the monsters you kill when playing videogames? If they are truly the monsters or if you are. How about the different pathways our determination can lead us? With Undertale, it makes you question your humanity or more accurately, your LOVE. Here’s in my professional unprofessional opinion on why you should play Undertale.
The creator, Toby Fox, made Undertale on September 5th, 2015, and it had caused an uproar in the gaming world with its unique storytelling. Varying from Flowey’s shocking true identity that I won’t be spoiling to the deleted savefiles still affecting your future gameplays.
The story of Undertale revolves around Frisk, the 8th fallen human but the 7th soul needed, as they traverse throughout the underground, we learn about the world around us and depending on what actions us the player chooses will determine the kind of ending and how the story is told to us. There are three main endings in Undertale, The Pacifist Route, The Neutral Route, and The Genocide Route. Besides those, there are many many more endings that there’s no way I could list them all. Not to even mention that your past gameplays still affect your future gameplays, like for an example, if you had done the Genocide Route, you are automatically locked out of True Pacifist Route.
In my gameplay, I had gone down the normal pacifist route to see what the hype was about and it was the best decision I made when it comes to this kind of game. I had been so moved by the story and the pure emotional rollercoaster it had me in, that when I had gotten to the credits I had cried genuine tears. With the normal pacifist route I had taken, it had me emotionally attached to the things we were supposed to consider monsters, my favorite being Napstablook, and it had challenged my point of view on who are truly good people not only just in the game but in the world around me.
From what research I had done, the genocide route goes on a more darker path, showing us, the player, how far our determination to gain power can lead to becoming the real monster. I will not spoil the genocide ending due to it being hard to explain. I would also like to talk about LOV and EXP. At the beginning, we are taught about LOVE and EXP in a positive light but once we get near the end we are taught the true meaning of them, Levels Of Violence and EXecutioner Points.
Speaking about points, I want to talk about fun values. Fun value is what makes every gameplay unique, it generates a random number 1-100 and has a random thing happen, but the certain fun values i’ll be talking about are 61, 62, 63, 91-100 and 66. I speak of this because of a Mystery Man and his followers. There is a chance if your fun value lands on 66 you will meet Gaster, who speaks in a secret language you must decipher, not to mention his 4 followers that have their own respective fun value, goner kid having the biggest chance of appearing with having the fun values of 91-100 respectively.
So please, if you have the chance, play this game and experience a new point of view on monsters and humanity. Who knows, maybe it will change your life like it had me. And if you enjoy Undertale do please check out Deltarune, it is made by Toby Fox also but the gameplay and story are very different in the best ways possible!
