Lead Academy Dean Deontae Collier is a dean at Freeport High School who has worked with students for a long time because working with students is his passion.
“I do what I do here at Freeport High School because I love what I do,” Collier said. “I feel like this is a calling, a passion. I want to help shape and mold the young men and women to be what I know they can be because not only are they our future, but they’re our present. So, I try to pour everything into the kids because this is who I am. This is what I love to do.”
He is always trying to find ways for students to not get in trouble whether that is coming to his office to take a break or just talking to him.
He’s one of the easiest deans to talk to because of how relatable and understanding he is, according to students. He knows how to listen and put himself in someone else’s shoes because he was once a kid who makes mistakes by getting in trouble at school.
“He’s a really good dean,” junior KZ Morehead said. “He helps us out a lot whenever you need something. He’s someone to go to when you need to talk.”
Over the years, Mr. Collier has consistently advocated for students’ needs and worked tirelessly to improve our school experience.
“Mr. Collier always cares about the students,” Associate Principal Alecia Leeper said. “His number one goal is to make sure they have what they need between the are pantry, providing sound advice, being a listening ear. Even when I need him to step in for a student, he’s always available. His goal is to make sure that our culture and climate matches what our students need but it’s also safe for everyone. He’s doing a phenomenal job with it.”
