The journalism team will be competing in sectionals this April for the third year in a row.
Freeport High School created a journalism team three years ago when Jena Kleindl and Haley Kurtz went to an IJEA conference. There, the Galena High School journalism teacher encouraged them to give it a shot.
This year, journalism sectionals will be held on April 11, in both Kurtz’s and Kleindl’s rooms at the high school.
This extracurricular can be difficult with the limited time they have to complete their events and with learning their prompts the day of right as their time starts, according to the teachers.
“For students, it’s definitely the time crunch and applying skills they’ve learned in class to different contexts,” Kleindl said.
The students will get their prompts the day of sectionals and have from two hours to four hours to complete the requirements for their event. Two events, photojournalism and TV News, have all week to work on their prompts.
Devine Johnson, a new addition to the team, is looking forward to “seeing the prompts and to see what I can pull off.” Johnson said.
The students will learn who moves onto state on Friday, April 17 and will compete at Heartland Community College on Friday, April 24.
