After the Freeport Pretzels lost 11 seniors last season, they are looking for yet another successful year under Head Coach Shaun Dascher.
They will be rolling with a completely new lineup this year. Ben Summers, a senior for the Pretzels, had this to say about working with a new group of guys.
“It’s gonna be a new experience, and once we all start coming together, I think the season will be pretty good,” said Summers.
The Pretzels opened their season at Hustle Field on March 21st, against Rock Island High School. They came out victorious, with a score of 11-8. Summers was the starting pitcher and went 4.1 innings, allowing 3 runs.
The Pretzels’ offense was led by an outstanding performance by Junior Brody Stewart, who was 3-4 with 2 home runs, all in the same inning, one being a grand slam. Sophomore Ashton Roelfs also had a home run to tie the game at 2-2 in the 4th inning.
“I felt good having my first varsity hit be a homerun, and it was a huge confidence boost,” said Roelfs, “I felt better about my fielding though as a sophomore starting shortstop.”
A huge sixth inning, where the boys scored 7 runs, helped them secure the win. Now the team will look forward to Conference play, which starts up on April 15th, against the Belvidere Bucs.
The next Boys Varsity game will be on March 25th at Hustle Field at 4:30 pm.
